What Are Resin Bound Patios?

In simple terms, a resin-bound surface is made by mixing loose aggregate (gravel) with a clear resin binder*. This is why it is sometimes called resin-bound gravel.

It's not just any old gravel, though: the aggregate has to be heated in a kiln and washed carefully.

This is mixed on-site and laid carefully to form any pattern or shape that you wish, in an incredible variety of colours.

So far, so good - but why are resin-bound patios becoming so popular?

*not to be confused with resin-bonded surfaces, where the resin is laid first and gravel is cast onto the top and pressed in. Resin-bound patios are more durable and easier to maintain.

What Are The Benefits Of Resin Patios?

Although resin-bound surfacing has been around in the UK since the 1990s and has been a popular choice for many people, it has really taken off in recent years, helping to transform outdoor spaces across the country.

When you explore the benefits, it's easy to see why:

A professionally installed resin-bound patio is seriously attractive. The surface looks textured but is smooth and level. It has the appeal of coloured gravel but without the hassle of scattered stones.

Resin patios are incredibly easy to maintain: to keep it looking great, all you need to do is give it a regular sweep and maybe run a pressure washer over it a couple of times a year to keep it free from dirt and dust!

With correct installation by a qualified professional, like Resin Crew, you won't have any problems with weeds, and regular sweeping will stop moss and algae from forming.

By changing the type of aggregate we use, it's possible to create an almost endless range of colour choices! What's more, we can accommodate any design or shape you can dream up, so you can really let your imagination go.

With a resin-bound patio, you can choose a design that really shows off your personality.

Unlike some other types of patio materials, resin patios allow water to pass through. Why is this a bonus? Because the trend for installing patios and driveways (as well as covering entire gardens) with solid, impermeable surfaces has contributed to local flooding.

Urban runoff is the name given to rainwater that flows into the drains in built-up areas because impermeable surfaces don't allow water to soak into the ground naturally. Drainage systems struggle to cope with this, leading to localised flooding.

Resin-bound patios and driveways are porous, allowing water to seep through tiny gaps in the structure, thus reducing the volume of rainwater that flows into the drains.

To ensure full permeability, the sub-base beneath the resin patio also has to be porous.

A typical guarantee for a resin-bound patio will be between 10 and 21 years, although they will often last in excess of twenty-five years.

The caveat here is that you must hire a reputable, competent contractor to install your resin patio. Its success and longevity depend on the quality of the materials and installation process.

This material is for more than just patios! Resin-bound gravel can be used for driveways, paths, swimming pool surrounds and tree pits.

It looks neat, smart and beautiful, wherever you choose to install it.

All outdoor spaces are under attack from wind, rain and sun.

Sunlight eventually bleaches colour from some types of material, but resin patios can cope with this and remain vibrant for many years. However, this is only the case if high-quality resin and kiln-dried gravel are used.

Some customers are concerned about the apparent smoothness of the resin surfacing, worrying that it could be a slip hazard.

This would be a problem if the resin and gravel mix was laid and left as it was. However, all reputable resin-bound patio companies apply finely crushed glass while it is curing, forming an anti-slip surface.

How Much Does A Resin Patio Cost?

Professional resin patio installers usually charge by the square metre, so it depends on the size of your patio area.

However, there are several other factors that will affect the final price, including the complexity of the design, colour, and the type of textures and shapes you choose.

The cost can be significantly reduced by laying a resin-bound patio over a suitable existing surface, such as concrete or tarmac, but this has to be in excellent condition. Bear in mind, also, that this may affect the permeability of the surface, although this is more of a problem if you are having a resin driveway installed as you may encounter problems with local planning laws.

If a new sub-base is required, it will be necessary to excavate the patio area, which adds to the cost. Even so, resin-bound patios still compare favourably with options like block paving, especially in the long term.
